Company: DesignRush

We are thrilled to have you join us today, welcome to ValiantCEO Magazine’s exclusive interview! Let’s start off with a little introduction. Tell our readers a bit about yourself and your company.

Gianluca Ferruggia : I’m Gianluca Ferruggia, the General Manager at DesignRush, where we strive to bridge the gaps between businesses and professional agencies. Born out of a desire to tune into the digital heartbeat, our company operates as a B2B marketplace, ensuring that companies can connect with agencies that align perfectly with their project needs.

My journey into the digital world started quite early, pivoting constantly towards areas where technology and business intersect. In the world of digital agency management, I’ve found my sweet spot, aligning my skills in international business, digital marketing, and strategic planning to create effective growth-driven design strategies.

DesignRush, at its core, reflects a model of modern entrepreneurship – we embrace the challenge of having no physical offices, which has been both innovative and fruitful in today’s landscape. We operate fully remotely, which has allowed us to tap into global talent and serve our clients in the most flexible and efficient manner possible.

My expertise spans across several domains, including SEO, online advertising, campaign management, and more. My role often dovetails into various aspects of team leadership and human resource management, while also maintaining a keen eye on the financial pulse of the business.

I believe that constant learning and adaptation are vital in staying ahead, especially in fields as dynamic as digital marketing and technology. Every day is an adventure, underscored with new problems to solve and strategies to develop. I’m excited to delve into more of what we do at DesignRush and share insights that could help other businesses and entrepreneurs make informed decisions in the digital era.

What does success mean to you beyond financial growth, and how has your definition evolved over time?

Gianluca Ferruggia : To me, success has always been a multi-faceted concept. Initially, my definition was inclined towards financial growth and profitability, which seemed like natural markers of achievement in the business world. However, over time, my perspective has evolved to embrace a broader, more holistic view of success.

Success goes beyond just the numbers in a bank account or the bottom line on a financial statement. It involves personal fulfillment, the impact we create, and the legacy we leave behind. As the General Manager of DesignRush, I’ve learned that success is about cultivating a work environment that supports creativity, fosters innovation, and promotes the well-being of the entire team. Being able to lead a fully remote company has underlined the importance of building a robust company culture that transcends geographical boundaries.

My definition of success now includes the ability to empower people. For me, it’s a triumph when I can help my team develop their skills, achieve their professional goals, and find personal satisfaction in their work. Watching a team member excel because of an initiative we’ve implemented is as rewarding as meeting any financial target.

Success is about building lasting relationships, both within the industry and with our clients. It’s about being respected for our ethical standards, our commitment to excellence, and our ability to adapt and thrive in the rapidly changing digital landscape. It’s also about making a positive impact on the community and contributing to the greater good, whether through our services, mentoring, or knowledge sharing.

As I’ve navigated through the intricacies of international business, I’ve realized that success also means being culturally adaptable and globally aware. It’s about fostering diversity and inclusiveness, understanding various market needs, and seamlessly integrating this knowledge to provide exceptional service to clients worldwide.

In essence, my definition of success has grown to be more aligned with personal growth, team achievements, and societal impact rather than solely financial growth. It reflects a balance of achieving business objectives, personal development, and making a positive difference in the broader industry and community.

Can you share a specific failure or major setback that unexpectedly led to a significant breakthrough in your career?

Gianluca Ferruggia : Certainly, there was a particular incident that turned out to be a pivotal moment in my career. One failure that stands out happened early on when I endeavored to set up an ambitious digital marketing campaign for a key client at my former agency. I had done extensive preparation and was confident in the strategy, but unfortunately, the campaign did not yield the results we anticipated. The client was dissatisfied, and it was a major setback, both professionally and personally.

The failure taught me an invaluable lesson about the dynamic nature of digital marketing and the importance of agility and adaptability. I had to critically analyze where we went wrong and how our data interpretation failed to predict the market response. This experience shifted my focus towards a more data-driven approach, where continuous testing, feedback, and iteration became the cornerstone of all our campaigns.

Ironically, this new approach not only won back our original client with improved campaigns but also became a key selling point for us, setting our agency apart from the competition. We pioneered a growth-driven design strategy that resonated with other businesses, demonstrating our commitment to adaptability and learning from mistakes. This eventually led to significant growth for the agency, and for me personally, it solidified my expertise within the digital marketing industry, teaching me the importance of resilience and innovation in the face of failure.

Looking back, that setback was a catalyst for change, pushing me out of my comfort zone and forcing me to grow not just as a marketer but as a leader in the digital space. It strengthened my problem-solving skills and strategic thinking, which played a pivotal role in leading DesignRush to where it is today.

How do you measure personal fulfillment and impact in your role as an entrepreneur or CEO?

Gianluca Ferruggia : Measuring personal fulfillment and impact is multifaceted as it encompasses both subjective personal satisfaction and objective business outcomes. Personal fulfillment for me comes from the alignment of my work with my core values of innovation, growth, and leadership. I feel accomplished when I see my vision for the company materialize into strategies that propel us forward in the digital agency space.

The impact aspect is gauged through several key indicators. The foremost is the success of DesignRush in connecting businesses with the right agencies, which is evident in the growing number of partnerships we facilitate. Client satisfaction and repeat business are strong signals that we are making a real difference in the market.

On the entrepreneurial side of things, the growth and scalability of our operations are a testament to our impact. As a fully remote company, we have had to pioneer multiple practices and processes to manage our large team effectively. Witnessing the seamless collaboration across different time zones and seeing the team thrive in this environment is a concrete measure of my impact as a CEO. Furthermore, the financial health and revenue growth of DesignRush consistently reflect the direct results of our strategies and business practices.

Employee growth and development are also close to my heart. When I observe my team members advancing in their careers, embracing leadership roles, and taking initiatives that align with our corporate vision, I recognize not just my role in mentoring them but also the broader cultural impact we’re having in the industry.

In a more overarching sense, my role in influencing the digital marketplace and contributing to shaping industry best practices is a clear measure of the impact I have in my current role. Whether it’s through driving innovation in B2B marketplace development or implementing growth-driven design strategies, the ripples of influence reaching our clients and the digital marketing community at large are a testament to my personal commitment to excellence and progress within the industry.

Lastly, feedback—both from our team and our clients—is vital. It helps me refine our direction, sustain our core values, and ensure that both my personal actions as a leader and our collective actions as a company remain impactful and fulfilling.

What unconventional advice or practice has helped you overcome challenges and redefine your approach to business?

Gianluca Ferruggia : As the General Manager at DesignRush, which operates fully remotely, I’ve discovered the power of authentic communication and the acceptance of not having all the answers.

Traditional leadership often suggests that you need to present a façade of invulnerability and assuredness. However, I’ve found that being open about uncertainties, especially in the fast-evolving digital landscape, can foster a culture of collective problem-solving and innovation. By admitting when I don’t know the answer, my team is more inclined to step up, share their ideas, and together we navigate towards solutions that might have been overlooked in a more command-and-control environment.

This practice has also allowed us to be more adaptable to changes in the B2B marketplace. In a world where technology and trends evolve rapidly, certainty can sometimes be an illusion. So, by preparing my team for ambiguity, we’ve been able to pivot more quickly and efficiently when unexpected changes occur, such as algorithm updates that affect our digital marketing and SEO strategies, or the adoption of new software that impacts our project management flow.

To complement this, I’ve also implemented a ‘fail fast, learn quickly’ culture. By encouraging rapid experimentation within a structured framework, we can innovate without the fear of making mistakes. This has allowed us not only to tackle challenges but to anticipate them and continuously evolve our strategies in growth-driven design and online advertising.

In a nutshell, embracing vulnerability and fostering a culture geared towards adaptation and rapid learning has been transformative. It has shaped a more resilient organization that thrives on collaboration and is agile in an unpredictable digital world.

How have your setbacks shaped the culture and values of your organization? Can you give an example of how these values are reflected in daily operations?

Gianluca Ferruggia : My setbacks have had a profound impact on fostering the culture and values of our organization. We embrace challenges as opportunities for learning and growth, a perspective born out of experiencing and overcoming numerous obstacles.

One significant setback we faced was the initial difficulty in establishing trust with international clients and agencies due to the lack of a physical presence. This challenged us to develop a culture of exceptional transparency and communication. For instance, we now prioritize over-communication in our remote settings, ensuring that every team member and client is on the same page, which fosters trust and collaboration.

Another pivotal moment was when we attempted to scale up too quickly without the proper infrastructure, which led to operational inefficiencies. From that experience, we learned the importance of sustainable growth, which has become a core value. This value is manifested daily as we meticulously plan our initiatives, scale teams strategically, and implement robust processes that ensure we’re always delivering high-quality service without compromising our operational integrity.

We’ve had our fair share of hiring dilemmas — bringing on talent that wasn’t the right fit for our remote work culture. These situations taught us to prioritize cultural fit and adaptability in our hiring process, and now, we integrate our core values into every stage, from job postings to interviews and onboarding.

We also celebrate resilience, another of our core values, every day. We begin team meetings by sharing challenges and how we’ve navigated or are navigating through them — professional or personal. This vulnerability has cultivated a supportive atmosphere where team members feel safe to take risks and speak openly about their experiences.

In conclusion, our setbacks have been instrumental in carving out a culture that values over-communication, sustainable growth, cultural fit, and resilience. These values aren’t just words; they are the lifeblood of our operations, influencing every decision and action at DesignRush.
